The Law of Positive Attraction

Essence: Like attracts like; to create a particular reality you must put out energy of a similar sort.

Remarks: This Law is often cited for moralistic purposes to discourage unwanted magical behavior, on the grounds that behaving badly will attract evil or bad luck.

The Law of Negative Attraction

Essence: Like attracts unlike; energy and actions often attract their “opposites.”

Remarks: This is an ironic twist on the law of positive attraction, warning us that sometimes you get the opposite of what you send out. “No good deed goes unpunished” is how some would put it.

There has been much talk about the Law of Attraction during the past few years ever since the now-famous marketing tsunami called The Secret – embedded itself into the pop culture consciousness of people everywhere. But what exactly IS the Law of Attraction, and why are people so enamored by its message? Simply, the Law of Attraction is a belief that says that prosperity and health can be yours if you follow a few simple rules. People pay a lot of money to attend seminars, enroll in online courses, and buy all kinds of books and movies learning how to use the law of attraction to attract wealth and abundance. The main purpose of the Law of Attraction is simply this: what a person thinks about manifests in their daily life, whether the person is aware of this or not. Thus, the proponents of the Law of Attraction claim that the keys of abundance and prosperity are fostering a positive attitude, intense emotional desire, creative visualization and most important, avoiding negative people. I often hear that for the law of attraction to work, you should believe that you already have what you are trying to attract. Does that mean that you should do something reckless like buying a bunch of things that you can’t afford because you believe that you will get a lot of wealth anyway.

If someone would be tempted to believe in the law of attraction, he could certainly buy into the notion that since he will become rich, he might as well enjoy his riches now by dipping into questionable credit opportunities or carelessly overspending.

However, my personal belief is that the law of attraction is a new age conceptualization which is outside the boundaries of science, including psychology.

Hi! I have recently been reading "The Secret" which explains the Law of Attraction. Does the law of attraction really work? Can you please give me reasons and examples of why you believe it works? (like a story or etc.) Thank you!

I believe it "works".

The reason I put "works" in quotes is because it’s a belief not a means.

When I first was introduced to the law of attraction, I was interested in it because I wanted "stuff". A better job, more money, a better relationship, etc. The more I learned, the more I realized that it’s not about "getting the stuff". It’s about the journey towards getting the stuff.

You probably already believe much about the law of attraction. You just haven’t related it so. Example: Would you believe that if you are in a "good" mood vs a "bad’ one that your mind would be more open to suggestions? Do you believe that once you are having success that you tend to get on a roll? Would you believe that if you are in a good mood, people are more willing to interact with you?

All of these relate to the law of attraction.

"The Secret" tends to lean towards getting things that you want. As you expand your horizons, you’ll find that it’s true, but only in the context of appreciating the things that you have, turning your focus to the things that you want, and be happy/ excited/ eager for the future to unfold. By doing this, the law of attraction will work for you.

Also remember that your desires change constantly. The car you want today might not be the car you want tomorrow. So it’s not about "getting the car". The car changes. It’s about keeping happy which in turn attracts those things that will continue to make you happy.

You probably wanted a story where I manifested something that I attributed to the law of attraction but you could easily doubt that. Who knows what actually caused the manifestation. I hope this helps a little more with your thoughts.

Northshore officials hoping new stores boost Christmas sales
ST. TAMMANY, La. — The battle is on to attract holiday shoppers, and there’s some new ammunition for the fight on the Northshore.
